Healthcare

Healthcare

Every Michigander should have access to quality, affordable healthcare regardless of income, age, or status. As a registered nurse for the past 39 years, I have seen the detrimental effects of costly health insurance and inadequate coverage and this has to change. Healthcare affects every aspect of our lives. It is a right and a necessity. Mental healthcare must be expanded in Michigan and as a former mental health nurse, I have seen the effects of the lack of care in our state.

Jobs and Wages

Jobs and Wages

Families come first. We need to improve the opportunities for all people in Michigan to earn a living wage by cracking down on wage theft and updating overtime rules. Good paying jobs grow our state’s economy. A good economy means Michiganders can get ahead, not just get by. Families must come before corporations. As a small business owner of a family run remodeling company, I know how to grow a business and promise to help small businesses do the same. Corporations have to start paying their fair share. Michiganders deserve increased training and education so that they can perform jobs in their hometowns.

Education

Education

As a former special education school nurse for local public schools, I embrace public education and believe it is the bedrock of a successful democracy that equalizes the playing field for all Americans. Taxpayer funds should not be used for charter schools unless they have the same accountability and transparency as public schools. All children deserve a quality education. I support 2 years of free community college education and apprenticeship and job training programs. I also support increased skilled trades education in high school so that our students have the option to graduate and immediately enter the workforce.

Infrastructure

Infrastructure

I support repairing the roads and bridges in Michigan by taxing corporations that, in the past seven years, have not paid their fair share. Michiganders have been overtaxed through higher and higher gas taxes and registration fees. Polluters must pay for the damage they cause. The DEQ needs proper oversight, rather that oversight by corporations the DEQ is intended to monitor. I support the prevailing wage act that ensures good wages with the local workforce and uses local building standards to help prevent accidents, overruns, and mistakes. High speed internet is necessary to increase commerce in our state and that’s why I support efforts for every rural community to have access.

Environment

We live in the 101st District for a reason – it is beautiful, sacred, and cherished. We must protect our environment and hold corporations accountable for the damage they cause. This includes proper oversight to ensure minimal damage to our land, water, and air. Line 5 must be shut down to protect our great lakes and the Michigan economy. I believe Michigan should increase the renewable electricity standard to 30% by 2030. Michigan, along with the federal government, should also work to reduce carbon emissions by 35% below current levels by 2020 and 80% by 2050.
