Healthcare

Healthcare

Every Michigander should have access to quality, affordable healthcare regardless of income, age, or status. As a registered nurse for the past 39 years, I have seen the detrimental effects of costly but inadequate health insurance and this has to change. Healthcare affects every aspect of our lives. It is a right and a necessity. This includes mental healthcare, which must be expanded in Michigan. As a former mental health nurse, I have seen the effects of the lack of care in our state.

Jobs and Wages

Jobs and Wages

Families come first. We must increase opportunities for all people in Michigan to earn a living wage by cracking down on wage theft and updating overtime rules. Good paying jobs grow our state’s economy. A good economy means Michiganders can get ahead, not just get by. Working families must come before wealthy corporations. As a small family business owner, I know how to grow a business and promise to help small businesses do the same. Corporations have to start paying their fair share. Michiganders deserve increased technical and job training so that they can perform jobs in their hometowns.

Education

Education

As a special education school nurse for 14 years in local public schools, I embrace public education and believe it is the bedrock of a successful democracy. All children deserve a quality education. Public education equalizes the playing field for all Americans and helps children reach their full potential. Taxpayer funds should not be used for charter schools unless they have the same accountability and transparency as public schools. I support 2 years of free community college and more opportunities for apprenticeship and job training programs. I also support increased skilled trades education in high school so that our students have the option to graduate and immediately enter the workforce.

Infrastructure

Infrastructure

In rural northern Michigan, our infrastructure is crumbling. I support repairing our roads and bridges by taxing corporations that, in the past seven years, have not paid their fair share. Instead, Michiganders are being overtaxed through higher and higher gas taxes and registration fees. Polluters must pay for the damage they cause. The DEQ needs proper oversight, rather than oversight by corporations the DEQ is intended to monitor. I support the prevailing wage act that ensures good wages for our local workforce and uses local building standards to help prevent accidents, overruns, and mistakes. High speed internet is necessary to increase commerce in our state and that’s why I support efforts to bring access to every rural community.

Environment

We live in the 101st District for a reason – it is beautiful, sacred, and cherished. We must protect our environment and hold corporations accountable for the damage they cause. This includes proper oversight to ensure minimal damage to our land, water, and air. We must increase testing of our water to prevent deadly toxins from entering our wells and water system. Line 5 must be shut down to protect our great lakes and the Michigan economy. Our environment must be put before the profits of greedy corporations that benefit from our resources. I also believe Michigan should increase the renewable electricity standard to 30% by 2030. Michigan, along with the federal government, should also work to reduce carbon emissions by 35% below current levels by 2020 and 80% by 2050.
