04 Oct Outside money infiltrating election
To the editor:
Corporate campaign money from outside our district is seeping into our local elections. Why should we care?
We should care because wealthy people and corporations outside our district with their own interests are influencing the politicians that we believe should be listening to and working for us. We should care because these politicians will have decision making power over who will have access to Healthy Michigan and Medicaid, whose taxes get raised or cut, who gets resources for infrastructure improvements, and so on.
Jack O’Malley, who is running for the State House in the 101st District, has accepted the bulk of his money from corporate PACs that are heavily funded by the DeVos family, Meridian Health, and Central Transport—all of whom are outsiders.
We take great pride here in the 101st on being independent and self-sufficient. I don’t believe for a minute that the DeVos family or Matty Maroun (owner of Central Transport) can make better decisions for us so they and their money should stay out of here. We can handle ourselves just fine, thank you.
